EGYPT - Soma Bay

This summer I decided to take a trip to Egypt and go riding in warm waters and steady winds. I wasn't meant to be on my own but accompanied by my friends who are sharing the passion for kiteboarding and diving. Soma Bay came into the radar with promising winds, a lagoon for kiteboarding and a mega house reef to spend some quality time diving. From previous trips I knew about Egypts kind hospitality and I was looking forward to spending a week with these inviting people. We were staying at the Breakers which is focussed on water sport activities but has all the facilities to make for a nice family holiday. The most outstanding feature of the hotel is definitely their beach access to a private 400m long jetty which allows you to dive straight into the house reef.

The Breakers is collaborating with the 7BFT Kitehouse which is located at 5-10min towards the inside bay. To get there you take a shuttle bus which is doing a run every 30 minutes from the hotel. The kitehouse is pretty amazing with a restaurant, pro shop, school, repair shop, showers, literally anything you can imagine. This is the place to hang out and get in touch with the other guests when your not kiting. I've met heaps of people there which where hanging out and enjoying the atmoshphere.

Right, what's going on with kiting? The bay is fairly curved with a moderate drop off edge on low tide. Once the tide comes up it fills a larger, more shallow area which is nice for freestlye. The wind is side offshore and tends to swing more offshore in the afternoon, which is my preferred wind direction. All I was riding was a 7 - 10m kite, always well powered in 35C air and 28C sea temperature, so far the stats. In case you get in trouble there is always a boat waiting, ready to rescue your gear and give you a hand.

Between the people and the riding/ diving conditions, the only thing holding you back of going there is probably the political situation in Egypt. All I can say is that I personally felt very safe with all the locals taking care of us and making me feel very comfortable. Make sure to chat to other people (www.kiteforum.com or www.oase.com) that are currently on holliday in Soma Bay. They will be able to give you a live update from the spot. Me and my friends have more then enjoyed our stay as Egypt keeps on delivering those splendid kitesurfing and diving conditions.
